Medications

Absolutely NO illicit drugs for 2 weeks.  NO alcohol for 5 days.  NO tobacco for 7 days prior to and after surgery.  Absolutely NO herbal medicines, and NO diet pills for 1 month before and after surgery.

 

DO NOT TAKE THE FOLLOWING FOR TWO WEEKS BEFORE & 2 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

Vitamin E:  Prolongs bleeding time and cause hematoma.

Aspirin:  Alka-Seltzer, Anacin, Ascriptin, B.C., Bufferin, Cheracol 
capsules, Cope, Coricidin, Darvon compound, Disalcid, Dristan, Ecotrin, Empirin, Excedrin, Fiorinal, Good's, Midol, Percodan, Robaxisal, Sine-Aid, Sine-Off, Sinutab, Triaminicin, Vanquish.

Herbal Medicine: Billberry, Dong Quai, Echinacea, Ephedra, Fish Oil, Garlic, Ginko, Ginseng, Golden Seal, Hawthorne, Kava Kava, Licorice, Melatonin, Red Clover, St. John's Wart, Valerian, Yohimbe.

Antibiotics: to avoid: Flagyl, tetracycline, Vibramycin, Zithromax: delays coagulation time.

Antidepressant drugs: Anafranil, Asendin, Aventyl, Depakote, Desyrel, Effexor, Elavil, Endep, Ludiomil, Norpramin, Pamelor, Paxil, Prozac, Remeron, Serzone, Sinequan, Surmontil, Tofranil, Vivactil, Wellbutrin, Zoloft: effects the action of epinephrine.

MAO inhibitor drugs:  Nardil, Parnate.  Stop one month before surgery.  No surgery unless cleared  by prescribing physician.

 

Antipsychotic drugs: Etrafon, Haldol: effects the action of epinephrine.

Anti-obesity drugs: Adipex-P, Desoxyn, Didrex, Fastin, Ionamin, Plegine, Phentermine, Pondimin, Prelu-2, Redux, Sanorex, Tenuate, and any other new one must be stopped completey for one month before surgery.

Anti-inflammatory drugs: Advil, Aleve, Celebrex, Clinoril, Flexeril, Indocin, Lioresal Motrin, Nuprin, Nalfon, Naprosyn, (Naproxen), Tolectin, Toradol, Vioxx: stop 5 days before and 2 days after surgery.  Prolongs bleeding time.

Pseudophedrine & Epinephrine: Actifed Cold & Allergy, Advil Cold & Sinus, Benadryl Allergy Decongestant, Bromfed, Claritin-D, Drixoral Cold& Allergy, Duratuss, Entex, Novahistine, Robitussin, Tu-Tuss, Seldane-D, Sudafed, 
Triaminic, Tussar, Tylenol Sinus.  Stop 1 week before surgery.  Reacts with anesthesia.

Methamphetamine & Amphetamine products: Stop one month before and after surgery.

Tagamet:  Prolongs prothrombin time, decreases platelets, and prolongs bleeding. Chlor-Trimeton:  Stop 5 days prior to surgery.

 

Foods containing salicylates (aspirin): Limit these foods as much as possible:  almonds, apples, apricots, berries, cherries, cucumber (pickles), currants, grapes, nectarines, oranges, peaches, plums, prunes, tomatoes.

NOTE: Mega dose of Vitamin C 3000-4000 mg and some Vitamin A may help with healing, and a diet with high protein during recovery is also beneficial.
